Pre-Production Bible For A Documentary

Print/ Digital

I interned at Phaedrus Films as part of my graduation project to create the pre-production bible for the documentary about the GMR Varalakshmi Foundation. The project's goal is to showcase CSR projects carried out by GMRVF during the past 30 years, with a focus on the region surrounding Rajam, Andhra Pradesh.

Initial Mindmap for Pre Production Bible

Pre Production Bible also known as a show bible or pitch bible,
is a reference document used by screenwriters for information
on characters, settings, and other elements of a television or film project. This bible contains different aspects of a film like overview of the project, the setting, tone of voice, characters, locations, the crew and some more crucial elements of production.

The Brief was to design a system for the Pre-Production Bible for the crew which contains valid and necessary information that would help the technical and creative teams to work with out any roadblocks at the time of production.

Content Hierarchy

Extensive research has been done for this to finalize the content. Interviews, Secondary research and also multiple other bibles were also taken as the reference during the process.

Ideation

I've completed the necessary research and am now moving on to the project's ideation phase. I've started analysing and questioning myself from several angles, such as what the bible's size should be, what type of typeface is most suited for certain shooting scenarios, and what kind of paper needs to be utilized if the bible is going to be printed.

Images of questions that I had and the things to keep in mind.

Typography

Both Serif and San Serif typefaces were explored during the process with both pros and cons in terms of legibility and readability.
I have also decided to do a multi-lingual bible at this stage.
As there were also local crew participating in the production. Covers were also been explored during this time.

Test prints of selected typefaces. Telugu typeface selection was done at a later stage.

Layouts

After perfecting the type, I quickly moved on to exploring additional layouts using some of the ideas I had in mind. At this time, the bible's form factor was also decided. The size would be
A5, which would be appropriate for carrying the bible during busy production times.

Layouts were explored both in portrait and landscape orientation.
